Frugal Families for USA Today

I shot this photo a couple of weeks ago for the USA Today. You can see the story here It ran in today’s money section. Good Morning America and USA Today have an ongoing series called “Frugal Families.” Every month they have a new challenge and chose two families to compete and trim bills, etc. This month was saving on gas. With 4 driving kids and 3 cars, these guys go through a LOT of gas, but they were able to trim there usage by 30%. Impressive. This was shot at their Camas, WA home on a day where the wind was howling through the gorge at 40-50MPH. Can you say sandbags?? I ended up using 4 Alien Bees on this photo, all with the the bare reflectors on them because any softbox or other modifier and the lights would become huge sails and fly away. So I set it all up, and waiting for a break in the gusts here and there to fire the frame.

You’re right, that was a classic gorge wind day!!! Remember we had to tie the ladder down too? It turned out well I think.

Nice work. You dealt with the wind really well. I’ve had lot’s of difficulties in situations like that.
