Copper is my new favorite color
Busy day in the studio today. I was shooting a belly dancer clothing catalog and had about 8-10 models in the studio. I know, rough. I have worked with Ziggy here a bunch of times, she’s a blast. Today she was wearing all bronze/copper/burnt orange stuff and I thought it looked really cool on her, so I made a portrait of her at the end of the day. Click the jump to see the setup.
I am often inspired for lighting setups in magazines and saw a really cool portrait of Albert Pujols in ESPN the other day that was shot with a fill light and some grids, so I wanted to do the same type of setup here. The main light is a 10 degree grid on her face. There is a large octoboz as a fill light and another 20 degree grid coming from above to light her necklace/clothes. There is also a light with a CTO gel between the cloth background, hitting the black backdrop. All in all, I like how it turned out. Here is a photo of the setup:
Let me know what you think!
If you are interested in learning more about lighting, there are still a couple of spots left in my “Lighting at 7000 feet” workshop on Mt. Hood this week (3/31). Info and registration on the PMPA website.

Money shot – I would think copper would be my favorite after this as well. Studio looks sweet after the renovations!

Nice light on the model. What I really love about this image is the lighting and texture of the background which really compliments the overall image. Nice work Craig.
