Wedding Lighting Workshop

On Saturday I held a lighting workshop about how to use light at weddings. I demonstrated how a lot of photographers use straight on camera flash and how much better the photo could look, just by using some off camera speedlights. The top photo is a cake along the wall, shot with on camera flash. Yuk! The bottom photo shows how much better it could look with one off camera speedlight and a reflector (or in this case, the white shirt of someone standing next to it.

The point being, that it does not take much to make your photos better.

Another example, the table. On the left, shot with on camera flash. Dark, boring, horrible background, but by adding a couple of lights and changing your angle, you make a much more memorable photo.

And finally our Bride and Groom. Again, with on camera direct flash and horrible background and then by changing our position and adding one off camera light, it makes the photo so much better! I had a blast teaching and hope the 20-25 people who showed up learned a thing or two. I’ll be doing many more workshops through 2010, the next one at the PPO Convention in February.

Thanks so much for doing this free for us! The thing that really hit it home for me was how you explained looking for the available light and just enhancing it rather than overpowering it. That makes things a lot less scary for me.
