So you want to be a wedding photographer
I recently wrote a story for SportsShooter.com about becoming a wedding photographer. It was published a couple of days ago and is currently featured on the front of the site. You can read it here. Let me know what you think.

As someone who is toying with the idea of learning enough to venture into this field, i thought your article was both insightful and encouraging. Thanks!

Great information but when you add up the total of:
2 Canon 5D Mark II
1 Canon 1D Mark IIn
4 Canon Speedlights (2 580EX’s 2 550EX)
6 Pocket Wizard MultiMAXes
16-35mm 2.8
15mm fisheye
24mm 1.4
85mm 1.2
50mm 1.8
70-200mm 2.8
300mm 2.8
1.4 extender
2 Digital Camera Battery external batteries for the speedlights
Honl Snoots and Gobos
Gray Cards for custom white balance
3 light stands
Misc. cords for remotes and stuff to make it all work.
That’s easily more than 40k. Something a business can’t afford to fork over when starting out. What about a list of photography gear that is the absolute bare minimum?

Michael,
Good point. I do mention in the article that you should have a wide lens, a wider lens and a telephoto lens, as well as a couple of flashes. I would say bare minimum, you need a fast wide lens, a fast telephoto lens and 2 camera bodies. Remember, its not the gear it is the photographer, the gear does not have to be the best when you are just starting out.

That was extremely helpful!

I enjoyed reading your article because you seem sincere, knowledge and down to earth not only about photography but personally… If I didn’t live across the country, I would be estatic to hire you!
I wish I could be your assistant (haha). Your photographs are amazing and I feel inspired by your style. I love how non traditional you shoot athletic teams, I hated those boring, front-middle-back row shots in high school.
Thanks for sharing!
