Randy Leonard
I was sitting in my office editing some pictures yesterday around 2:00 with my daughter Jordyn, who was coloring a very fine photo of Mickey Mouse, when the phone rings:
Me: “Hello?”
Editor: “Yes, can you go shoot Randy Leonard for the cover”
Me: “Sure thing, when”
Editor: “Today 3:00, he has 15 minutes”
Me: “Ok, you know its 2:00 right now?”
Editor: “Yep”
Me: “No problem!”
My main camera case, with all my cameras and pocket wizards and lenses, etc was at my house, 5 miles away so I called up my awesome wife and she hauled butt down to the studio with my gear and to pick up Jordyn. I got downtown at about 2:20 and found a spot right across the street from City Hall and setup a couple of lights. Then, things got a little fun! Apparently, the park I had setup in (about 15 feet from the sidewalk) was a Federal park. I had no idea. But a couple of SUV’s pulled up with lights on and “Federal Police” “Homeland Security” written on the side. They got out asked me what I was doing, told me I needed permission, etc, etc. I explained what I was doing and tried to smooth talk my way out of actually getting written permission to shoot in a park, they took my ID, wrote down who I was photographing, etc and then let me be, pulling away just as Mr. Leonard walked out of City Hall. I shot a few different angles and pictures and he was off. Just like that. I’ll post the cover when it publishes next week.
