Portrait for the Business Journal

I was assigned by the Portland Business Journal to shoot a portrait of the CEO of a local health club. She was quoted in the article talking about a new outdoor water park that the club just put in so we wanted to shoot her out by the new park. The problem here (well not really a problem for the people in the pool) was that it was a sunny, which makes shooting a nice lit portrait a little tougher. Solution: Use a scrim to block the sun. The scrim serves two purposes, 1) to shade the subject so I can have more control of the light and 2) let just enough light through to act as a fill. I used two Canon speedlights, on on 1/4 power as the main light. I zoomed this light to 85mm so that there was not very much fall off on her and the second light was set at full power and zoomed to 105mm for the rim light to separate her from the background a bit. As I said before, the sun through the scrim did a nice job of filling in the shadows. Here is a shot of the setup:

I shot a few different angles and shot with a couple different lenses to get a couple different looks in about a 5 minute window. I like this one the best, even though the background is busy it has the park, kids and the pool in the frame and shows what we set out to show. Not the most exciting portrait in the world, but it will work. Wish I lived in Gresham (actually no I don’t, Gresham is such a shit hole), I would join this club just to be able to use this pool/water park, it’s pretty sweet, my kids would love it.
