Sunset Wedding
At every wedding I shoot I tend to keep a close eye on the sky so I can grab the bride and groom should some cool sunset take place. Saturday at Willamette Valley Vineyards down in Salem, the smoke and haze that fill the valley from forest fires around the region made for a very cool looking sky. I saw this developing and knew it would not last long, so I grabbed a couple of Canon speedlights and the couple and we walked into the field. 1 light high 1 light low a couple of stops under the key light. I like it. Next time though, I’m going to add a third light for a rim light. i would have done that here, but this light was only around for about 5 minutes. Click on the image for a larger version.

This is really nice. So you used 2 speedlights on tripods?

Hi Mitchell,
great work on this. I love the sunsets we get here in Denver. Like you, I am always trying to grab shots with that as my backdrop whenever I can. I currently use a couple sb800’s fired with RP’s, but no softbox. Looks like you have some sort of modifier here, yes?
Nice work.

I have a question. I would like to take such a wonderful sunset photo with my friends. I have a Canon T2i with a Canon speedlight 580. I just can’t figure out how I have to change the settings to get this spectacular effect. Either the background sunset is perfect, but the couple is too dark. Or the couple looks overexposed and the background too. Can you help me?
